International Dialing & SMS

Tropo developer accounts are massively enabled for free testing, and international dialing is no exception. While still using a developer account, you can call out to landlines in the following countries completely for free (please note that U.S. means continental U.S. - Hawaii, Alaska and territories such as Puerto Rico or Guam are omitted, as are any Caribbean countries that also use country code 1):

    In order to make outgoing calls, you will need to contact support (either through the forums or via support@tropo.com and request access. You won't be able to dial any non-US mobile number while still in a developer account; using a production account, you can call out to any number.

    Some numbers are forbidden at a system level by Tropo and cannot be enabled for any account. Examples are 911 for the US Emergency, 44999 for UK Emergency, high-fraud premium rate number ranges, and some identity-verification services that use phone numbers to establish new accounts.

    In order to dial a number, it needs to be in the following format (this example is for the Netherlands with the country code 31):

    +31105550100

    There is no need to include a local dialing code as you'd use when making an international call from your phone. For example, when using a mobile phone, a US caller needs to dial 011 before a number to dial internationally. A mobile caller in the UK needs to dial 00 before the number. Neither of these are needed, you only need to dial the country code and the number.

    Access to phone numbers in some countries is limited by local laws.

    To get a phone number in Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, or Singapore, you or your business must be located in that country. You'll need to contact Tropo Support with a home or office address in that country before we can give you a number.

    For Croatia, Norway or Germany, and for geographical and toll-free numbers in South Africa, you'll also need to provide documentation proving you live in the area that matches the phone number's country code and prefix (so if you request a number that begins with +49 221, you'll need to provide documentation proving you live in Köln, Germany). We accept utility bills, an identification document (like a driver's license), a business license or a lease contract. We cannot accepts screen shots, business cards or letter head.

    For Hong Kong numbers, you'll need to provide us with your address. This address doesn't need to be in Hong Kong. Residents anywhere in the world can get a Hong Kong number, but the law requires us to collect your address when ordering the number.

    When you open your application and hit "Add a new phone number", you'll see a link to open a support ticket for numbers in these areas; once opened, you can include your documentation or address there. Note that the process to procure a number in your specific region can take up to 10 days, depending on number availability.


    Worldwide SMS

    Tropo applications can send SMS messages to any number in the world if the application has a SMS-enabled number attached to it. To ensure message delivery, you should send from an appropriate number for the destination.

    SMS can be sent both development and production applications. However, like international calling, you must contact support (either through the support portal or via support@tropo.com) and request access

    Text messages sent to the US or Canada should be sent from one of Tropo's US SMS-enabled phone numbers. Standard local numbers in the US should only be used for personal communications. For automated application-sent messages, it's best to use one of Tropo's SMS-enabled toll free numbers. Tropo's US numbers can only send messages to the US and Canada and should not be used to send messages outside North America.

    Text messages sent to a country where Tropo offers SMS-enabled phone numbers should be sent from a number in that country. Message delivery is always better when a message is from a number that's in the same country. The list of countries where Tropo offers SMS-enabled numbers can be found a few paragraphs earlier on this page.

    If Tropo doesn't offer SMS-enabled numbers in the country you are sending to, or if you don't meet the address verification requirements for that country, we suggest that you purchase a SMS-enabled UK standard geographic number from Tropo and use that as your caller ID.

    In some countries, a mobile carrier will change foreign SMS sender IDs to a local number or short code. When this happens, the recipient of your message will not see your Tropo application's phone number as the sender of the message, and will instead see this carrier-supplied phone number. This means they will be unable to reply to your Tropo application, as those replies go back to the carrier-supplied number instead of your Tropo number. This also means that they may receive messages from several different foreign senders that all appear to be from the same local telephone number.
